Larry joined the Army during the Korean War and used the GI bill to enroll at Southern Illinois University where he became the first person in the Blus family to get a college education. He used these degrees in Zoology and Botany to study birds, working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a leading biologist researching how DDE and DDT affected the eggshells of brown pelicans. He was an avid philanthropist contributing to many organizations. His favorite hobbies were spending time with family, watching birds, reading, playing games, singing, attending church, listening to his wife sing in the church choir, watching his children and grandchildren play sports and perform. Larry never let a person pass without reaching out for a handshake or hand hold. He was welcomed into Heaven, with angels singing, "Well done."
A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined. His remains are interred at Oak Lawn Memorial Park, Corvallis, Ore. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift of remembrance of Larry to the National Wildlife Federation, the Macular Degeneration Association, Sarasota, Fla., or St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Beaverton, Ore. 2019.04.16 00:02 harrison_wintergreen UPDATED: 100+ Mutual funds with 12% average annual growth for 10 years or more.

This is an updated list of mutual funds with average annual growth rates of about 12% or better, for the previous 10 years or since inception (fund creation). The emphasis is on Fidelity because they have so many 12% funds (27) but over a dozen companies are included. I wanted to show how most investing companies have 12% funds if you simply bother to look.
A few funds have long-term averages of 11.7% to 11.9%. TRULX from T Rowe Price will have a 10 year track record in June, 2019. Otherwise, all funds have 12% average annual growth rates for 10 years plus. Oldest 12% funds I found was PIODX (inception 1928). AIVSX from American Funds is probably the fund Dave mentions in his portfolio with an 80+ year record of 12% growth.
My commentary FWIW is listed below the funds.
= = = = =
Funds info is summarized like this:
Ticker Symbol - Average annual growth / Year of Inception / Annual fee
Example:
FCNTX is Fidelity's Contrafund. Average annual growth since the fund's inception is 12.49%. The fund was created in 1967. The annual management fee is 0.82% ($8.20 per $1,000 invested in the fund). If you want more info on any particular fund, do an internet search on the 5-letter abbreviation. Morningstar.com is usually the best place to start.
(∆) indicates the average annual growth over the previous 10 years (usually first quarter 2009 to first quarter 2019) rather than the average since inception.
(§) indicates 4 or 5 star rating from Morningstar. Morningstar is an independent rating firm that evaluates mutual funds and other investments based on growth rates, fees, long-term stablity, management strategy and other factors. 5 stars is their best possible rating. Morningstar also has a free feature to compare funds from any US companies. Select any fund, go to "performance," click "compare" and type in the new fund's 5-letter ticker symbol to get a line-chart comparison of growth rates.
(†) indicates a fund is closed to new investors. This usually happens to keep the fund size under a certain limit for ease of management.
(Ω) indicates a fund has a front-load fee of 5.75% off the top with each contribution, in addition to an annual management fee. Front-load fees have fallen out of favor since the 1980s but are not necessarily awful depending on growth rate.
Data accurate as of early April 2019; info mostly from 31 March 2019 (close of first quarter for 2019).

Commentary:
Late 2017 I posted a Fidelity-only list of 12% funds to /personalfinance and /investing as well as /daveramsey. Good response here, but the other subs were basically not interested. Go figure. Lots of reasonable advice overall on those subs (particularly on /personalfinance), but I've largely given up discussing this 12% subject. It's like trying to convince flat-earthers that we live on a sphere.
Compiling this information took a grand total of about 5-6 hours. Two hours in 2017 for the Fidelity info. Another 3-4 hours in early April 2019 to update Fidelity and research other companies.
Beyond websites for Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard, T Rowe, American Funds, I used Wikipedia's "List of mutual funds families in the United States." From there I went to company websites: All Funds > Sort by performance. Morningstar and Marketwatch also have good info. Googling variations of "funds that regularly beat the market" led to lesser-known firms (e.g. Wasatch Funds) which were not on the Wikipedia list. MBA-level research /s.
My list is not comprehensive. Got burned out at ~90 funds, didn't examine Hennessey Funds, Thrivent, Virtus, Baron Capital, Waddell & Reed.... FWIW I like Fidelity. Wide range of funds, lower fee options than Vanguard if that's your thing. $0 minimums. Start a Roth IRA with $1.
To review, Dave Ramsey recommends 401k or IRA investing with 25% going into each of the following (or as close as possible). Growth stocks when possible, growth rates as close to 12% as possible.
I slotted all funds into these categories or "other". "Other" indicates sectospecialty funds or Target-date funds that Dave does not recommend. Ramsey does not like sector funds because they are usually higher-risk. He does not recommend target-date funds because he disputes that your portfolio should get more conservative as you age and he does not like bonds. He has a point on bonds [ http://tinyurl.com/y4pxgjsl ] But I am listing all ~12% funds I found.
Some of these funds have higher fees than index funds. Dave is correct when he says don't panic over fees. All things being equal, lower fees are better. But fees are only part of the equation -- literally. Do the math. 11% average annual growth with a 1% fee will make you more money than 8% growth with a .04% fee. [ https://imgur.com/a/A7czVRw ] Research shows that the amount of money you save is the most critical factor in a secure retirement. Savings rate is more important than growth rate, fees or allocation of funds. [David Blanchett and Jason E. Grants, Retirement Success: A Surprising Look into the Factors that Drive Positive Outcomes. ASPPA Journal, Summer 2011. Dave mentioned this study on air and I tracked it down].
Disclaimer: I am not a finance professional. I have no formal training, license or certification in this subject. I am a blue-collar guy who reads about this as a hobby. Do not take my word for anything. I double-checked everything but there might be typos or transposed numbers (my eyes glazeth over). Do your own thinking and consider consulting a licensed professional.

2014.12.02 19:24 Nostavalin Should I cash in my inexpensive whole life policy?

To continue today's life insurance theme, I have been wanting to ask opinions on my policy.
Background:
In 1986 when I was a toddler, my dad set me up with a whole life type policy. I knew about this, but for ~25 years it was his thing. He paid the premiums. Once I got married I decided it would be a good idea to take control of that and change the beneficiary to my husband. Since then (about a year) I've been paying the premiums. My dad did it just as a nice thing and he doesn't care if I cash it out, so yay no potential tension there.
Policy Details:
Life Details:
I am currently unemployed (but looking), thus my husband does not depend on my income. I haven't done anything with this policy because it isn't very expensive, and my thought was at least it's funeral money if I die. We don't have a full emergency fund (yet) or any other way to pay for funeral costs. I am only 30, though. If I cash it out I'd either use it to beef up the emergency fund or put it in my IRA.
Question:
Would you recommend keeping it or cashing it out?
